FAQ

What is the sound therapy?

It is a holistic relaxation method. Through the soothing vibrations and clear sound, we could reach the theta state of the mind, which is somewhere between waking and sleeping (3–8 Hz). In this state, our breath becomes quieter and deeper, and we begin to let go. Through letting go, we can achieve an emptiness of mind that leads to a new level of harmony.

Is Peter Hess® Sound Massage suitable for everyone?

The human body contains more than 100 trillion cells and 70–80% liquid that goes through a wonderful effect during a massage treatment, such as a fascinating walk in the depths of nature.

The Peter Hess® therapy singing bowls are positioned according to a specific system on and/or around the clothed body and played gently with the mallet. Singing bowls have a wide range of tones, and your body will absorb the frequencies it needs. During a full-sound massage, you start lying on your stomach, and halfway through, you will be asked to turn over.

The sound massage lasts about 40–45 minutes. After the sound massage, you will have enough time for grounding and the opportunity to reflect on your experiences, along with a cup of tea. The harmonious sounds calm the mind. The rhythmic sound vibrations relax the body. The soul experiences space to develop. Regeneration on all levels can happen.

History of the bowls,
and about Peter Hess

History of the
bowls, and about
Peter Hess

Peter Hess – German engineer for physical technology- spent several months in Nepal in 1984 taking measurements of power and energy sites. During his research project he met with the singing bowls and has been inspired by the old knowledge about sound.

History of the singing bowl

It can be assumed that singing bowls have existed since humankind started to work metal. However, the exact origin of these instruments is from India, Tibet, and Nepal. Probably, singing bowls were originally used for food storage and ritual offerings.

There are hints that singing bowls have been used in Bon shamanism during shamanic rituals. Bon shamanism is the shamanic natural religion of Tibet that was later partly assimilated by Buddhism. Singing bowls were allegedly used during healing ceremonies or during rituals inducing trance.

As just described, singing bowls have not been used for any kind of sound massage, neither in India, Nepal, nor Tibet—at least there is no evidence of it.Sound massage is a new Western method; it has been developed since 1984 by Peter Hess in a therapeutic way.

Development of the Peter Hess method

In his first courses, Peter Hess still used old singing bowls, mainly from Nepal, and it became apparent that certain characteristics were important for his kind of bodywork. Thus, Peter Hess started to develop his own singing bowls over a period of several years.

The singing bowls known as Peter Hess® therapy singing bowls are made of 12 different metals, still made by hand in a traditional way.

More than we can see, hear and touch, something has to be beyond our senses. When I met the singing bowls and the Peter Hess® method for the first time, I had already been studying and practicing Buddhism at the Drupka Kagyü Buddhist Community, which represents the Buthanese Drupka Kagyü lineage. I have a certification in The Technology of Feeling Subtle Energy, samatha, satipatthana, vipassana meditation and Shiatsu massage working through the body’s meridian lines. Looking back over the past decade, my first experience with the Peter Hess® singing bowls on my body was unexpectedly the most useful physical tool to keep our busy minds still. I have felt myself reborn for days, free from any unnecessary thoughts. This is a perfect outer tool that can help with several difficulties (physically, mentally, and emotionally) in a very simple, but sometimes the hardest, way. Through the deep relaxation, there is nothing but peace. No question, but acceptance. No bad feelings, but pleasant of our own being. As a qualified Peter Hess® sound massage singing bowl practitioner, I am sure this is something that the doctor should give to anyone on a medical prescription.
